A tale of two cities by Charles Dickens?
Anyone tell what should I expect from the story? Thanks.
I’m not exactly sure how to answer this. You find, in A Tale of Two Cities, a story that is complicated, full of various characters and their stories, a story some love and some don’t.
You will find an explanation of what lead up to the Reign of Terror in France, when so many men, women and children were sent to the guillotine.
You will find a story in which the French Revolution affects the lives of the characters, both English and French, alike.
You will find a cautionary tale to rulers of other nations, England in particular, who think “it can’t happen here.”
The first chapter will show what attitudes lead to this rebellion; how the poor people were oppressed. The story also shows that excess did not merely belong to the ruling classes, however, but to those poor who went too far with their bloodlust; their desire for vengeance.
With this French Revolution swirling in the background, you will read the story of an Englishman who lives a dissolute life only to be changed by a love which is not reciprocated, one who ends by willingly sacrificing himself. You will read of a Frenchman who suffered greatly at the hands of the nobility only to have a daughter who marries a man from the family who harmed him. You will read the story of this man of noble French birth, renouncing everything for which his family stood and going to England to make his own way in life. This same man gets caught up in the desire for revenge exhibited by one woman whose family was destroyed by his family.
