Is it illegal to own MP3 songs in India if used for private use only?

Is owning a large collection of thousands of songs in MP3 format illegal in India, which a person uses for only personal use; even though most of them aren’t encoded from personally owned CDs (compact discs) as is allowed in some countries where you can archive or backup your CD collection into MP3 format.
