what book was the basis for herman melville’s moby dick?

A journal written by Owen Chase, who was a crew member on the whaling ship ‘Essex’. The ship was attacked by a whale and many of its crewmembers killed. Chase called his book “Narrative of the Most Extraordinary and Distressing Shipwreck of the Whaleship Essex”.
