The writing of Scott Turow as compared to John Grisham’s, which one is better and why?
Both are legal thriller writers. Why many think that Scott Turow’s writing is better than John Grisham even though John Grisham is more popular?
I can see the similarities in their writings. Can you see the differences?
Turow’s work stays very much in the gray areas while presenting a tense police procedural and trial, as in Presumed Innocent.
You are certainly correct that Grisham is more popular. He is also more prolific. The gray areas disappear in his books. The good guys vs the bad guys are seen much more clearly. The evil attorneys in The Firm and the tobacco interests in The Runaway Jury are sneeringly evil. Mass sales translate into a watered-down message.
I’ll go this far. Movies, as most everybody knows, always water down the books that they are based on. The movie, Presumed Innocent, is still more subtle and a better more believable story than two of Grisham’s most popular novels: The Firm and The Runaway Jury.
