Replacing car battery… is a memory key really necessary?

I’d never heard of a memory key until recently. Is that for more modern cars? I have a 2000 Cavalier. They say if you don’t have a memory key to write down your PIN # so you can type it in when you install your new car battery… What PIN #? And type it in where, on my clock radio? Sounds kinda weird. Anyway, are memory keys vehicle specific, or do they sell them at any car parts store? And what’s the worst thing that can happen if you don’t do this memory thing? Will my car’s electronics be all messed up and cause it to roll off a cliff, or will I get no response as if the car spoke a different language? That would suck if I can’t start my car because I didn’t keep its memory.

Go to SEARS and purchase a memory saver. It requires a 9 volt battery and you plug it into the cigarette lighter. There is enough voltage to maintain the computer and memory for approx. 2 hours or more. Disconnect the battery and replace. You will not loose clock time, radio stations, electric seat positions, ECM memory, nothing. The computer will not have to be re-taught.
