Last Mohicans James

I need some help with the book “Last of the Mohicans” by James Fenimore Cooper…?
If you have read this book…..what can we draw is his opinion of Indians? I have to analyze this book and I have no idea, it is so confusing!! I would much appreciate the help!!
It’s not confusing at all. “Mohicans” is a really simple book in most ways. Heck, it’s a story of a kind of wild west frontier scout who has an Indian friend and they both get involved in the French and Indian War by helping some British guys (and their cute daughters) travel around in the woods fighting off other Indians and the (evil) French. Waht’s confusing about that? What’s putting you off is probably the fact that “Mohicans” was written almost 200 years ago — it was one of America’s very first novels — and written in a very “over the top” and kind of complicated (silly, really) writing style. But, so what? Just read it and think of what Cooper was describing. It’s not hard to make sense of, really, if you just keep reading.
You might even find it useful to get a plot summary (online?) and read that for each chapter before you read the chapter. This is NOT cheating IF you read the chapter. If you just read the plot summary you will (a) be cheating since you’re not doing the work (b) not understand most of the details in the chapter since the plot summary just gives, well, a “summary” and (c) your brain will surely die because your aren’t exercising it–and you do not want that to happen.
His opinion of Indians is, as they say, “mixed”. Look, he’s got one or two very heroic Indians (look at Uncas and Chinachgook. They’re pretty impressive, helpful, loyal, and all that), but look at Magua, too. He is oh-so-nasty, can’t be trusted. Sooo, Cooper has good and bad Indians. Now, that wasn’t so hard was it. You just need to say (a) what makes each type of Indian good or bad, and (b) why Cooper, unlike most Americans 200 years ago, thought “some” Indians could be good, honest, loyal, while others were “savages” like Magua.
It might have something to do with Cooper’s rather romantic view of the wildernes which when he wrote the book (1820s, I think) was almost gone in New York, so Indians were a pretty romantic idea. Give it some thought, and just do your very best.
Oh, and do NOT let your teacher think you hate the book. As a matter of fact, tell the teacher what you think is pretty interesting about the book. Find something!! No one likes to be told their book choices stink, so do your best and don’t complain. It’s just a book, not a terminal disease.
