Proper Care Feeding
Keeping backyard hens-proper care and feeding?
I have 2 20 week Buff Orpington hens I bought a few weeks ago. I live in the city, but they are primarily free to roam my big yard during the day. I have a few questions about raising them properly;
-What are some good homemade and whole foods they like to eat?
-At what age do they start laying eggs?
-How do I increase or initiate egg production and quality of their eggs?
-Is dry feed enough? How much do they each need per day?(I give them cherries off of my tree, corn on the cob, various fruits and spinach, and raw eggs so far)
-Is it ok for them to eat the shells of raw eggs?
-How do I reduce their stress level (I have cats and dogs whom they get along with well)?
And any other information regarding city chickens and their care would be great. They are very friendly and tame little gals, and they are going to be spoiled pets for the rest of their lives.
Buff Orpingtons are geoorgous chickens and lay well. Very great mothers to my knowledge.
I live in the city as well. And have lived there for 1 years and owned chickens in the city.
– My chickens they are Black Australorps, decendants of the orpingtons. they love watermelon. Love it. They also like corn. Things they shouldnt eat are junk foods and potatoes. Feed them lettuce, carrots, and bread pieces. NOt often on the bread once every day in mall portons is fine.
– Most chickens begin to lay at 28-36 weeks, 7-9 monhs. But it all depends on the chickens some can layearlier than others and as late as a couple years.
– Well orpingtons dont really need help. They lay a lot naturlly. But to increase egg production you can put layer in with there origional scratch feed.
– No, not necaeearily. The sratch is fine but you can also feed them fresh fruits and veggitables. And grains.Rice yes but cooked. I dont feed mine that though. They need a full pan a day. Or until the food bowel is empty.
– Yes, its okay if they eat the shell, it gives them a bit more of mineral they need.
– Just make sure that they have plenty of fresh water and dont handle them too much. But make sure they have a roost to sleep in at night, on at night. Place them in a secure coop with top and so coons cant open a door and climb through a opening.
I love my chickens. You will love them as much as i do.. They have your heart and will stay in it. When you hae a bad day they are thre to cheer u up.
