What should I record for a voice over demo/audition tape?
I am considering auditioning for voice over work. I will need to record an mp3 file to email to the recruiter. What does this type of recording consist of? The job is for audio books, but could it be more generic for multiple uses?
Ideally you would have a demo reel that includes samples of various voice over genres: commercials, audio books, phone systems, etc. The demo reel would be up to 2 minutes.
Since you are specifically auditioning for audio books, your demo should include an audio book read, as the recruiter will want to hear how you are at audio books.
In fact, you could even make a demo of an audio book read *only*.
If you have something else you’d like to show the recruiter – an existing recording of something good – you can add that at the end of the MP3 file.
Some tips:
* You need to record using the best microphone you can get your hands on.
* Edit the audio in Audacity, which is a free download you can find online. Remove any breaths and background noise (replace them with silence). When you are satisfied, click File > Export as MP3.
* If you want to add background music, find free royalty-free music online, then import it into your Audacity project. To do this, open your voice over recording in Audacity, then click Project > Import Audio and browse to the music you downloaded. You can then listen to the voice over together with the music in Audacity and make adjustments. When you are satisfied, click File > Export as MP3.
