Do most film critics prefer Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett as the best portrayal of Sherlock Holmes?
I’m not sure about film critics, but Jeremy Brett stuck closer to the Conan Doyle source material than Basil Rathbone. Also, Basil Rathbone made films while Jeremy Brett was on television. I’m partial to Rathbone because he was my first “Sherlock” and he really looked the part to me. Brett came later, for me, and has had more episodes and air time than Rathbone (and, like I said, he stuck to the Holmes story lines from the books) but silly old me will always have a fondness for Rathbone.
Now Watson, on the other hand, is a different story. I never did like that Rathbone’s Holmes had a bumbling fool (with a good heart of course) for a Watson. Watson was a soldier and a doctor and was very courageous in the books. He was no fool and I felt that the filmmakers did him a great injustice in portraying him as such. But that’s just me.
