SpeechEasy fluency devices are small and inconspicuous - They are worn similar to a hearing aid. However, unlike hearing aids, rather than amplify sound, SpeechEasy devices use a system of Altered Auditory Feedback (AAF) to inhibit stuttering by recreating and optimizing the choral effect. What this means is that when someone wears a SpeechEasy device and speaks, their words are digitally replayed in their ear with a very slight delay and frequency modification. As a result, the brain perceives that it is speaking in unison with another person. This perception of "speaking in unison" creates the "choral effect", thus becoming a stuttering treatment that can reduce or even eliminate stuttering. This "choral effect" has been well documented for decades; however it is only recently that scientists have been able to recreate it in a small, wearable device for stuttering treatment that can used in everyday life.
Fluency Device Models
Fluency device models from SpeechEasy are all...
- Small
- Comfortable
- Ergonomic
SpeechEasy fluency devices are offered in three highly ergonomic models.
They include:
- SpeechEasy instrument worn behind the ear (BTE)
- SpeechEasy instrument worn in the canal (ITC)
- SpeechEasy instrument worn completely in the canal (CIC)
The latter is the smallest, most discreet fluency device made and our most popular style.
All three fluency device models are custom fit to the individual user's ear canal using an ear mold impression to ensure a perfect fit.
Obtaining a Stuttering Device...
Obtaining a stuttering device is simple. Our office is an authorized SpeechEasy providing location. You may contact us here to schedule an appointment for an evaluation.
You arrive at your appointment:
These evaluations typically take about 3 hours. Your stuttering will be measured and assessed, and you will be given the opportunity to try a demonstration version of SpeechEasy. During this process, we will custom-program the device to achieve the greatest improvement in fluency and you will be able to determine if SpeechEasy is right for you. You will be given the opportunity to try the SpeechEasy in a 'real world' (out of the office) setting.
Once the evaluation is complete, you can decide to purchase - or not.
Should you decide to purchase:
You will be given instructions to visit a local audiologist for an ear impression and a hearing evaluation. The cost for the impression and evaluation varies by audiologist, so to ensure you understand what to expect, ask what the cost will be. Once these are completed, you will need to return the ear impression and information to us to ship with your order.
The ear impression, payment and SpeechEasy order are forwarded to Janus Development Group for the manufacturing and programming process.
In about 3 weeks, your custom-made device is sent back to your Providing SLP.
We will contact you to schedule a 'final fitting' appointment.
When you arrive at this appointment, you can expect to spend approximately 1-2 hours with your Providing SLP. The SLP will be ... :
- Checking the overall fit of the device.
- Teaching you how to insert and remove the device.
- Performing device programming and making any final changes to the settings.
- Adjusting the volume.
- Demonstrating proper care and maintenance.
- Demonstrating additional therapeutic techniques.
You will have 60 days from the time of this 'final fitting' appointment to decide whether to keep the device...or to return it for a 90% refund.

Now the residents of Central Florida who stutter will have
access to the remarkable anti-stuttering device known as
the SpeechEasy®. SpeechClarity offers the small, hearing
aid style device that has proven immediately effective with
up to 85% of users in increasing verbal fluency.
The SpeechEasy® is a fluency-enhancing device, working
on a premise that researchers have known for years: most
people who stutter become more fluent when speaking in unison
with another person. The SpeechEasy® alters the speaker’s
own voice, either by delaying, changing the pitch or both,
creating the illusion of another speaker at the same time.
Although the device has been available for purchase since
June of 2001, it has not been offered within the Orlando
metropolitan area until now. The SpeechEasy® has been
featured prominently in the national media. It is estimated
that 3 million people in the United States alone are affected
by stuttering.
