The Wind in the Willows by Grahame, Kenneth [Paperback] $23.61 Although The Wind in the Willows is now, without doubt, considered one of the classics, in 1908 its original publisher feared for the books reception. Unlike Grahames prior novels which featured young children this story (originally entitled Mr. Toad ) features animals, clothed in ordinary garments and thinking, talking, and behaving as humans. He neednt have feared. Because The Wind in the Willows is something special a book that will bring out the child in every member of the family. You need to buy this book, and read it now, aloud. One does not argue about The Wind in the Willows, The young man gives it to the girl with whom he is in love, and, if she does not like it, asks her to return his letters. The older man tries it on his nephew, and alters his will accordingly. The book is a test of character. We cant criticize it, because it is criticizing us. But I must give you one word of warning. When you sit down to it, dont be so ridiculous as to suppose that you are sitting in judgment on my taste, or on the art of Kenneth Grahame. You are merely sitting in judgment on yourself. You may be worthy: I dont know. But it is you who are on trial. A.A. Milne, Author of Winnie the Pooh Author: Grahame, Kenneth Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 168 Publication Date: 2006/08/01 Language: English Dimensions: 9.00 x 6.00 x 0.39 inches |

The Wind in the Willows (Dodo Press) $22.61 Kenneth Grahame (18591932) was a British writer, mainly of the sort of fiction and fantasy written for children but enjoyed equally if not more by adults. He is most famous for The Wind in the Willows (1908), one of the classics of childrens literature. He also wrote The Reluctant Dragon, which was much later adapted into a Disney movie. While still a young man, Grahame began to publish light stories in London periodicals such as the St. James Gazette. Some of these stories were collected and published as Pagan Papers in 1893, and, two years later, The Golden Age. These were followed by Dream Days in 1898, which contains The Reluctant Dragon. There is a tenyear gap between Grahames penultimate book and the publication of his triumph, The Wind in the Willows. During this decade Grahame became a father. The wayward headstrong nature he saw in his little son he transformed into the swaggering Toad of Toad Hall, one of its four principal characters. Despite its success, he never attempted a sequel. The Wind in the Willows by Grahame, Kenneth [Hardcover] $43.11 The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, springcleaning his little home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing. It was small wonder, then, that he suddenly flung down his brush on the floor, said Bother and O blow and also Hang springcleaning and bolted out of the house without even waiting to put on his coat. Something up above was calling him imperiously, and he made for the steep little tunnel which answered in his case to the gravelled carriagedrive owned by animals whose residences are nearer to the sun and air. So he scraped and scratched and scrabbled and scrooged and then he scrooged again and scrabbled and scratched and scraped, working busily with his little paws and muttering to himself, Up we go Up we go till at last, pop his snout came out into the sunlight, and he found himself rolling in the warm grass of a great meadow.
